Twitter cites non-existent API rules to justify destroying the ecosystem of third-party apps

The company failed to go into detail and did not explain which rules were violated.


Twitter and its users have been on a wild ride over the past few months, with behind-the-scenes staff changes, features removed or improved, and many different types of rules introduced and enforced recently. While many users have sworn off the platform and moved on to other options, many still choose to stay and deal with what comes next.


One such “next-thing” arrived last week, breaking major third-party Twitter clients, leaving users and companies confused as to why. Now, after being silent for about a week, Twitter has shed a small ray of light on the subject, tweeting that it has started enforcing its long-standing API rules, stating that this is why some apps stop working.

With the tweet came a slew of comments from the Twitter community and as you might expect, some of the responses were pretty angry, while some were more blunt, asking for more clarity by trying to understand “which rules?” While this information is current, the information I mentioned about this A few days ago, she reported seeing internal messages that showed these actions by Twitter were intentional.

Unfortunately, it’s uncertain how this issue will be resolved, or if Twitter will talk more in the future. This is an issue that does not affect all third-party Twitter clients at this time.
